A Jewel in the Mediterranean which although part of
France betrays its Italian origins in both feel and cuisine.

Compromising the departments of the Haute Corse (20A) and the Corse du Sud (20B) Corsica is one of the rare European locations where you can swim in the sea in the morning and ski in the afternoon!

Boasting 600 miles of unspoilt and uncrowded coastline and a vertigos backdrop of mountains climbing to 9,000ft within which sit 3 ski areas with reliable snow above 1800m.

For fit and adventurous hikers the GR 20 is a real challenge and must not be underestimated with scrambling and changeable weather conditions to contend with- maps, compass and knowing how to use them are essential as are warmer clothes- it has been know to snow in July.

Geography in Corsica

114 miles long and 52 miles wide at its extremes there are more than 200 beaches and 40% of the total landmass is set aside as nature reserves.

Cuisine in Corsica

As with the island itself, Corsican food and drink is a brilliant blend Italian and French cuisine with each region offering something different. What is for sure is that there is something for everyone whether it be wild boar, rabbit, trout whilst the quality of the wine is improving.

History of Corsica

Birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, Corsica was colonised by ancient Greeks, occupied by the Romans, raided by the Saracens, owned by the Genoese, was briefly independent for 26 years from 1755 and finally taken over by France, perhaps understandably nationalist feelings still run high and Corsica enjoys elements of independence not seen in other French regions.

Climate in Corsica

Corsica features a Mediterranean climate which is characterised by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters with the north of the island being hotter than the south, and the east wetter than the west. The weather is influenced by the winds and the temperature is moderated by the mountains. Average summer daytime temperatures reach around 77F (25C) and can climb to as high as 95F (35C) in July and August.

However, due to the different altitudes it is important to realise that the climate is varied, even from valley to valley. Obviously the mountains are cooler and wetter and above 6,000ft the alpine zone is well named.
