From an area 30 kms North of Paris, close to the Roissy Charles de Gaulle airport, the southerm boundaries stretch eastwards towards Champagne and the Belgian border. Westwards, it extends to the English Channel. This ancient and hospitable region will not disappoint the visitor, with its choice of 4,000 hectares of lakeland, 1,200 kms of rivers, 70 kms of dunes, cliffs and luminous beaches, coastal marshes, forests and the bays at the river mouths of the Somme and the Authie.
Less than an hour from Calais (or 15mins from Paris Charles de Gaulle airport) you're in beautiful historic Picardie where the real France begins. Close enough for weekend breaks - and shopping breaks too of course. With dozens of charming towns and villages, a myriad tourist sites and wide variety of landscapes, Picardy is just as enticing for your holidays.

Historically, France was born here when Clovis made Soissons the first capital of the Franks, in 486, and later Hugues Capet, elected king of France at Senlis, was crowned at Noyon in 987. This proud past made Picardy the first French region, not only for historical buildings and monuments but, also, the premier region for its Gothic cathedrals. Amiens has been specially honoured, by UNESCO, for its architectural heritage.
The Cathedral of Our Lady of Amiens (French: Cathédrale Notre-Dame d'Amiens ), or just Amiens Cathedral, is the tallest complete cathedral in France with the greatest interior volume, estimated at 200,000 m³. The vaults of the nave are 42.30 m tall, the tallest nave vaults in France. This monumental cathedral is located in Amiens, the chief city of Picardy, in the Somme River valley a little over 100 kilometers north of Paris. Notre-Dame d'Amiens has been listed as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1981. A Son et lumière presentation illuminates its façade on summer evenings and at New Year's, approximating the original painted colors of its sculptures
There's Amiens, of course, capital of Picardy, barely 90mins drive from Calais, ideal for a short break in Northern France. A bustling University town, home of Jules Verne, with a glorious Gothic Cathedral (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Just one of many historic towns with world-class cathedrals or châteaux.
Take the trouble to explore, and you'll find Picardy to be one of the most rewarding provinces in France. Picardie's coastline is the least urbanised in all France with miles upon miles of beautiful sandy beaches and dunes. Great for windsurfing, land yachting, sailing, swimming and building castles. But there are lots of real castles too, often tucked away in the vast expanses of oak and beech forests (largest in all Europe). If it's a walking break you're after or even a cycling break, the choice is yours - choose between coastline and forests, vineyards ( aoc vineyards of Champagne stretch into southern Picardy) and wide open countryside.
