Good motorway access: the A20 motorway passing through Limoges

An area that is still developing and being discovered as for many years people either frequented its westerly neighbours, the Charente & Dordogne, or drove past to the east on their way south. Thus, the three Departments that make up the Limousin (Haute Vienne, Corrèze, Creuse) have been somewhat neglected.
The advantage of this is that they possibly more typify old rural France with large areas of farmland, unspoilt villages and an overall tranquillity. The eastern side of this area is, in fact, the foothills of the Massif Central range of mountains and the rain & snow they attract in winter months produces many rivers and lakes, many of them recreational.
The main town, Limoges, has Roman origins and an old quarter, whilst on the eastern side is the area known for fine Porcelain. More attractive, historical towns are found elsehere including Rochechouart (16th C. fortress Chateau); Boussac (15th C. fortified town with Chateau; Arnac - Pompadour (Louis XV stud farm dating from 1761) and Treignac (12th C. bridge and old houses).
In overall terrain, the fertile farmlands in the Haute-Vienne extend into the Creuse, whilst the further east and south of the Creuse and Correze the landscape becomes more rugged.
Numerous old towns and historical buildings; the route of "Richard the Lionheart"; walking and cycling along part of the "Saint James de Compostella" route after which a visit to the 60° thermal springs at Evaux les Bains will be required.

Aubusson has been famous for tapestries since the 15th century; Gueret has an impressive Art Deco museum; Chatelet a former gold mine; St. Léonard de Noblat has three porcelain workshops or just head for the Comptoirau Chocolat in Treignac and gorge yourself before, probably, driving up the nearby Suc au May, one of the highest peaks in the area.
